The Dawn of Microbudget Films
With the raging success of this past summer’s Paranormal Activity, the door has been kicked open for independent film makers.
Moreover, films with micro budgets have caught the Hollywood eye and can be profitable if they find the proper distribution.
To further highlight this, Paramount Pictures has announced the investment of $1 million a year towards producing 10-20 microbudget films. It’s not surprising considering the unexpected success of Paranormal. With a budget of just $15,000 the film went on to achieve a box office total of $107 million, bypassing 1999’s The Blair Witch Project as the world’s most profitable film.
This is good news for indy filmmakers and goes to show that good movies don’t need to have mega budgets in order to succeed and make a profit. Whether we are witnessing a new age in cinema or just another passing trend, the window of opportunity is open.
